Information
What is Space-A (Available)?
Space-Available (Space-A) military flights, also known as “hop” flights, are a privilege offered to eligible military personnel, retirees, and their dependents to travel on military aircraft at little to no cost when extra seats are available. These flights are operated by the U.S. Air Force’s Air Mobility Command (AMC) and other military branches, using cargo planes, passenger aircraft, or other transport planes.
How It Works:
Eligibility: Space-A travel is available to active duty military (on leave), retirees, dependents, and veterans under specific conditions.
Priority System: Travelers are categorized into priority groups (Category 1-6), with emergency leave and duty-related travel having the highest priority, and leisure travel (e.g., retirees and dependents) being the lowest.
Flight Availability: Flights are not guaranteed, as mission requirements take precedence, and available seats fluctuate.
Departure Locations: Space-A flights typically depart from military bases with some exemptions.
Destinations: Locations include domestic bases, overseas locations (Europe, Asia, Pacific, etc.), and even remote areas.
Pros & Cons:
✅ Pros:
- Free or very low cost (only terminal fees or head tax on some routes).
- Potential access to unique destinations.
- Great for flexible travelers who can wait for an open seat.
❌ Cons:
- Unpredictable availability (flights can be delayed, changed, or canceled).
- Strict eligibility requirements.
- Limited seating and priority-based boarding.
